The Institute was established in 1996 by Andrew Kleeberg to collect, preserve and make available to the public archival material pertaining to Polish immigration to Australia and the settlement of Poles in Australia since 1940.

It collects manuscript materials from all the states and territories in Australia and deposits them at the National Library of Australia under an agreement signed in 2000. This collection, known as the Collected Records of the Polish Historical Institute in Australia (MS 9562), covers the period 1948 to the present, and comprises records of Polish organisations and individuals, including correspondence, minutes of meetings, newsletters and scrapbooks.

The Institute does not own any building and meets in the office premises of the Canberra Branch of the Polish Ex-Servicemen's Association in Australia in the city. It is a non-profit organisation financed by donations and grants.
