The Polish Community of NSW, represented by the Federation of Polish Associations in NSW and its member organizations, in partnership with Nasza Polonia, Kresy-Siberia (Australia) Ltd and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland & its Consulate-General, Sydney invite you to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of “Katyn”.

The “Operation AB - Katyn” exhibition has been prepared by the Institute of National Remembrance (“IPN”) of Poland. The IPN’s President, Janusz Kurtyka was one of the many important national and cultural leaders, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, tragically killed at Smolensk while on their way to Katyn to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the massacre.
The exhibition has so far been shown in Poland, Vilnius and Stockholm, NSW to great acclaim.

The exhibition presents the repressive actions carried out in parallel by the Germans and the Soviets in the first months of the occupation of Poland during World War 2. These actions followed the partition of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

At the outbreak of World War 2 the Wehrmacht and the Red Army pushed through special groups of the SS and the NKVD to undertake a series of arrests and mass executions using previously prepared lists of Polish citizens.  The majority of those executed were members of the Polish intellectual elite including high ranking Polish Army and Naval Officers, Government Officials, members of the Judiciary, priests, police officers and academics.

In total it is estimated that 50,000 people were killed during these operations from 1939-1941.

The exhibition is in Canberra from 15th August to the 10th September at:

Polish Catholic Centre, 211 Goyder Street, Narrabundah

You are cordially invited to the opening on Sunday 15th August commencing at 12.30.

After that date please contact Father Henry Zasiura on 0421 878185 to arrange a time to see the exhibition. For other information contact Mr Witold Krzesinski, Polish Embassy on 6272 1000.

We acknowledge and thank the IPN and the Government of the Republic of Poland for lending the exhibition and funding its transport from Poland to Australia.

Yours faithfully
